Instagram parental controls: what Teen Accounts show you, and what they don't.
Updated
Instagram Teen Accounts make teens' accounts private, limit sensitive content and add sleep hours. With supervision, parents can set time limits and see who their teen follows and messages, but not the Reels or posts they watch. Socialeyes shows parents the actual videos and creators in their Instagram feed and lets them block specific ones.
What Teen Accounts and supervision cover
Instagram puts teens into Teen Accounts with stricter defaults: private by default, limits on who can message them, stricter sensitive content settings, and quiet hours overnight. Younger teens need a parent's permission to loosen them. If you set up supervision from Instagram's Family Center, you can also:
- Set daily time limits and scheduled breaks
- See who your teen follows and who follows them
- See who they've been messaging recently (not the messages themselves)
What it leaves out
Supervision doesn't show you which Reels, posts or Explore videos your teen actually watched, which creators they spend the most time with, or how much of their feed is politics, fitness, or anything else. Content settings are one dial for all of Instagram, so you can't take out one creator or one topic and leave the rest.
Seeing the feed itself with Socialeyes
Socialeyes shows every video your kid watches on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, Reddit and Pinterest, sorted by category, and flags political content and which way it leans. You can block a specific creator, topic or word everywhere, and it never reads their messages.
Common questions
Can parents see what Reels their teen watches on Instagram?
Not through Instagram's supervision tools, which show who they follow and message but not what they watch. Socialeyes shows parents the videos and creators in their kid's feed.
Does Socialeyes read Instagram messages?
No. It's built around the videos and creators in their feed, not DMs. It never reads their messages, records their screen, or touches their camera, microphone, photos, contacts or location.
